Draft 2 patch

OK, this version adds some error messages when appropriate, and moves the
digest/md5 common code into src/lib, where a new lib.a is built. The src
Makefile (for nALFS itself) has been modified to also link against this
library, in case it's needed in the future.

Tested with both md5 and sha1 digests, seems to work correctly for me.
