script to install LFS

I have written a bash script for the static part of the installation of LFS
(Chapter5). When I enter the chrooted environment the shell says:

I have no name!:/#

Trying whoami gives this:

I have no name!:/#whoami
whoami: cannot find username for UID 0

The $LFS/etc/passwd looks like this:

 lfs# cat /mnt/lfs/etc/passwd
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

And $LFS/etc/group looks like this:

 lfs# cat /mnt/lfs/etc/group
root:x:0:
bin:x:1:
sys:x:2:
kmem:x:3:
tty:x:4:
uucp:x:5:
daemon:x:6:
floppy:x:7:
disk:x:8:

I am perplexed as to why building with a bash script caused this problem.
Any guidance is appreciated!!
