LILO shows one letter at a time when it's getting into action. I remember a
mail on this list, which quoted them form the lilo man-pages/webpage.

One moment.... here it is:

>From the Lilo User's Guide (backtranslated from german translation ;):

The LILO start-code consists of two parts:

The first stage in a boot-sector and the second stage in /boot/boot.b.
During installation of LILO a "map-file" is created (default /boot/map)
where LILO stores the necessary pointers (sector-addresses) to the
operating-systems (Linux-kernel, etc.).

While LILO is loading it displays the letters LILO one after another.
Every letter equals to the finish of a particular stage. If it can not
start correctly the letters give a hint where the problem occurs:

 - (nothing)
No Part of LILO was loaded - LILO is not installed or a wrong
partition was bootet (not the one LILO is on)
 - L [errorcodes...]
e.g. L01010101 - First stage was loaded and started, but it was
not able to load the second stage /boot/boot.b. This is usually
a problem like a physical error on the boot-medium or a wrong
        hdd-geometry.
 - LI
Second stage was loaded, but could not be started. A cause can
be a wrong hdd-geometry or by moving of /boot/boot.b without a
        new installation of LILO.
 - LIL
The second stage was started, but was not able to load the
necessary pointers out of the map-file. Usually a pysical error
        on the boot-medium or a wrong hdd-geometry.
 - LIL?
The second stage was loaded to a wrong memory-address. Usually
an error caused by wrong hdd-geometry or by moving of
        /boot/boot.b without LILO-re-installation.
 - LIL-
The data of the map-file is incorrect. Usually a problem with
hdd-geometry or by moving of /boot/boot.b without... ;)
 - LILO
All parts of LILO were successfully loaded.

Maybe this helps you a little bit.
