minimum /dev entries for a 2.4.x kernel?

Does anyone have an idea of the *minimum* entries that must be in /dev for a 
2.4.x kernel to function properly? I know that a lot of it is dependent on 
the hardware and kernel options, but I would think there would be a common 
"this must be there" base...
