why cant i use my USB as modules?

Have you enabled hotplugging in the kernel (CONFIG_HOTPLUG) ? If i
remember correctly (possibly not, just came down with a really good head
cold :) ), if you enable hotplugging then you have to use it. If you
aren't, post your modules.conf.
