GIMP printing confusion

I'd like to install GIMP and be able to print with it. My printer is
already properly set up using CUPS.

It seemed to me that I have to first install the gimp-print package (to
be able to print at all), and gimp next. I do not want to install the
CUPS drivers provided by gimp-print (because I do not have an Epson
etc. printer), so it looks as if I should use --without-cups for
gimp-print, --without-foomatic etc.; basically disable everything but
the plain libgimpprint and its include file.

Is this the right way to install it? Or isn't it needed at all with such
a config? Or can't GIMP print via CUPS without gimp-print printer
drivers?
