No sound

I always ensure that the ALSA 'aplay' command will play a .wav file and
that the speaker-test command works as expected. ALSA libs and utils is
always one of the first things I install, and I check it out using those
tools. Once that works, I've never had issues with sound using any
other tool.

What happens when you use the speaker-test program as the root user?
