I think the easiest way to install it is to install cpio-2.6 (it's in BLFS) and then use the rpm2cpio perl script http://www.iagora.com/~espel/rpm2cpio to extract all the individual rpm's like so

rpm2cpio openofficeorg-$PACKAGE.rpm | cpio -idv

Then copy the opt/openoffice.org folder somewhere convenient and make a symbolic link from /usr/bin pointing at openoffice.org/program/soffice
