Is automount definitely running ok - can you post the output of:
$ ps auxwww | grep -i auto

What is the path to your autofs init script: is it '/etc/init.d/autofs' or
'/etc/rc.d/rc.autofs' or what? Can you post back the output of:
$ find /etc -xdev -type f -iname '*autofs*' -ls

When you do run the init script with the 'reload' param, what messages if any
get printed on your screen - can you copy'n'paste them here?
